Intent
At Frizington Community Primary School, we recognise that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and vital for financial literacy and future employment. We strive to ensure that all children develop a positive, confident and resilient attitude towards Mathematics that will support them throughout their lives.
We aim to provide a high-quality mathematics education, rooted in a mastery approach, so that all children:
-
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
-
reason mathematically
-
solve problems by applying their understanding to a range of contexts
(National Curriculum 2014)
Our central belief is that everyone can achieve in mathematics. We ensure that all children are exposed to rich mathematical experiences that build deep conceptual understanding, enabling pupils to become secure, flexible mathematicians.
Implementation
At Frizington Community Primary School, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning from EYFS to Year 6. White Rose provides a carefully sequenced, small-steps structure that supports the teaching of mathematics mastery. It ensures progression, consistency and cohesion across all year groups.
For mixed-age classes, teachers use White Rose’s mixed-age planning materials to:
-
Align and combine blocks appropriately across year groups
-
Ensure all pupils access age-appropriate content
-
Maintain the White Rose principle of small steps while allowing flexibility
-
Use whole-class modelling where possible, followed by targeted practice and scaffolds
This approach ensures that no child is left behind and that progression is maintained across year groups.
CPA Approach (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract)
Manipulatives are available on every table. Children are encouraged to:
-
Build the maths using concrete objects
-
See the maths through visuals and pictorial representations
-
Record the maths using symbols and formal methods
This supports deep conceptual understanding for all, especially in mixed-age cohorts.
Fluency Development
Alongside daily maths lessons, pupils participate in regular fluency sessions using:
-
TT Rockstars
-
Skills Check
These programmes strengthen recall of number facts, arithmetic skills and confidence.
Mastering Number Programme
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 participate in the Mastering Number Programme. Weekly 10–15 minute sessions build fluency with number, strengthen subitising and develop secure number sense using equipment such as the rekenrek.
Early Years Foundation Stage
In EYFS, mathematics is taught through:
-
White Rose early years materials
-
Development Matters statements
-
The Early Learning Goals for Number and Numerical Patterns
Children experience maths through continuous provision, practical exploration and planned adult-led activities. Mathematical learning is embedded across the indoor and outdoor environment and linked to children's interests.
Impact
Our mathematics curriculum, aligned with the White Rose scheme, ensures consistent, progressive and high-quality teaching that supports mastery for all learners. Progress is monitored through:
-
Teacher assessment against White Rose small steps
-
Termly standardised assessments (Cornerstones)
-
Pupil discussions and work scrutiny
-
Ongoing formative assessment in lessons
Teachers ensure the needs of all learners are met. Pupils are tracked through pupil progress meetings, where staff evaluate how provision is supporting their individual needs. Mathematics is applied across the curriculum, giving pupils opportunities to use their skills in real-life contexts and in other subject areas.
Ultimately, pupils leave Frizington Community Primary School as confident, competent and enthusiastic mathematicians who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
